Diversity in logistics: equal opportunities equals VERY good business

‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples’ – Mother Teresa

March 8th sees International Women’s Day celebrated across the world, what better opportunity than now then to talk Women In Logistics. Here at diamond logistics we champion individuals no matter of gender, sexual orientation or identification, race, class, religion or ethnicity, we cannot ignore however that the logistics industry does need a more diverse workforce particularly when it comes to women, less than 25% of all employees within the industry are women! This imbalance seems unfathomable when women bring with them critical skills that can add such value to the industry.

There is so much more to the logistics industry than people think and the opportunities are rife, and yes that includes for women.  The poor perception that there is no career to be had is incorrect; we have a team member, Becky who joined us five years ago who has progressed from a logistics co-ordinator to heading up the Network Support team and supporting with the launch of our new tech platform despatchlab. There are a number of different roles available to women in the industry, at diamond logistics alone we have female Fulfilment Centre Operatives, Sameday Drivers, Customer Service Advisors, Operations Co-ordinators, IT and Network Support, Finance, HR, Executive Support and female Franchisees, and of course our CEO Kate Lester.  Logistics plays a pivotal part in every industry worldwide from SME to global conglomerate, this means there are a number of roles available from business development or new sales to Health and Safety or system development that require a diverse workforce with a varied set of skills to make the industry successful.

Logistics gives people an opportunity of a changing environment, to see the UK and beyond, it gives the opportunity to work with new state of the art technologies with different people every day from smaller local start up businesses to large scale national operations, it can be really exciting, really rewarding and completely eye opening!

So all the Women and Men out there stand up and stand together, united as one and challenge the perception that Logistics is no place for Women.  It will take the entire industry to take notice and acknowledge that bringing diversity to the workplace and building an inclusive culture is important.  Together we can make a difference for the future.
