Sustainability Champion for The Diamond Network

Diamond is pleased to announce the appointment of a sustainability champion for their logistics network.

Welcoming Melanie Tattersall who is co-director of Darcica – our Diamond Logistics network partner for Bicester. As their Director of Sustainability, she is sharing her knowledge with the Diamond network in order for us to be at the forefront of 3PL’s working towards net zero. Melanie’s frankly been fixated about the environment for a very long time.

Melanie’s Background

Her father had a long, successful career in waste management and from a young age, Melanie was horrified accompanying him to work to find that quarries were being back filled with waste. This planted a seed to look at how we could reduce our impact on the environment and so her journey started. Melanie completed her master’s degree in Environmental Science with Legislation and Management at Brunel University in 2003, her father thought she was going to get into environmental law and or politics. But actually, she ended up working in the waste and recycling team at the local council and then moved on to work at Biffa where, coincidentally, she met her then to be life partner, Anthony, who is the founder and co- director at Darcica, Diamond Bicester.

Melanie says of her choice to work at the council “I really wanted to do something whereby I could be hands on at a local level. And I thought by working in environment or recycling within local government that I could have a meaningful contribution and impact straight away. Helping take South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse to become the top performing councils for recycling in the country was a very proud moment!”

Sustainability Achievements

And she has followed that throughout her career; Darcica have already been shortlisted for several awards for their sustainability and most recently won the Green Award at the Oxfordshire Business Awards in 2022. Well-practised in not only the operational reality but negotiating through the minefield of grant applications and Mission Zero accreditations to support their green ambitions and electric revolution, Melanie has agreed to share the template of this success with her new partners at Diamond Logistics HQ.

Kate Lester, Diamond Logistics CEO, had this to say,” In the same way that we had to look at diversity 10 years ago, we believe our green policies need a radical shakeup. We were one of the first Courier companies in the UK to run to a green standard, that was established when I was chairperson of the Despatch Association over 20 years ago. But the Checklist for a Green Office and an Environmental Statement are tokenism compared to the magnitude of what we’re trying to counter. If Diamond is going to support its clients to net zero within the next 20 years, then we have to up our game and sustainability is now a priority. Logistics as a sector, traditionally, has never been considerate of this. But the Diamond family of companies have always been different, and we all have children and grandchildren we want this earth to be healthy for”.

You can find out about Diamond’s existing environmental plan here, and our carbon footprint offset programme here, you can also find out about our new initiative at tree nation here. But please watch this space for the 2023 environmental shake up.
