When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up: Professional Footballer
How did you get into logistics: By chance. A friend was the Production Manager for a Printing Company & my son James had just been released from Spurs as a Professional Footballer & needed a job. So we bought a couple of vans & the rest is history.
Where did the Company Name come from: P & J are simply the initials of James & the original partner Paul.
What year did you found your Company: February 2002
What is your company story and history / growth to date: As I said we started with a couple of vans working for one printing company & we just grew organically in the Printing sector going from a couple of vans up to 10 within a short period. We operated on mobile phones & my office was the Costa in Croydon!! Although we were reasonably well established in the Croydon area in the same day market we were too dependent on a couple of clients so we took the decision in the spring of 2018 to expand our service offering to Next Day & following meetings with Kate Lestor & Dan Allin, we decided to join the diamondlogistics team. Our growth with diamond has been steady & we now have circa 60 new diamond clients. In March 2019 we recruited John Elsom from CitySprint as our Sales Director which signalled our intent to take our business to the next level.
What do you enjoy about owning your own business / Logistics: Lets be honest there are good aspects but there are also some significant challenges. In the past couple of years we have made a significant investment to set up the warehouse, office & staff which has put pressure on cashflow. However we are now beginning to see the benefits come through.
What business sectors do your current clients come from: Printing, bathrooms, nutritional, electrical, heath products, clothing, entertainment, baby products, decorating supplies & IT
Why did you decide to diversify now & what will your partnership with diamond mean to your business: The Same Day market remains the biggest part of our business however the Next Day & Fulfilment elements provide a regular income which is growing steadily. We believe our partnership with diamond will provide a greater identity & as the diamond Network grows, so will our exposure. I am optimistic that we will also benefit from the acquisition of National Accounts.
What drew you to diamond: I liked the fact that Dan Allin had walked the walk so we had a good understanding from the start. I was impressed with the systems & the concept of it. It is still early days but increasingly I can see what the direction of travel looks like going forward.
