What is Next Day delivery?

When people talk about Next Day delivery are they really talking about delivering the very next day?

Is Next Day delivery the same as Overnight delivery?

It can be confusing to a novice in logistics.

What Does Next Day Delivery Really Mean?

Next day delivery really talks about the methodology of delivery as well as the timing.

Next day delivery suggests that a consignment is picked up from your premises and collated at a local hub with lots of other packages and then trucked up to a main sortation hub somewhere in the centre of the country.

This basically means that a lot of hands touch your consignment between it leaving your premises and being delivered.

Now, the advantages of this are that it exponentially decreases the price. It also means you can standardise the price of all your deliveries regardless of where they are geographically.

Well, maybe there are some exceptions for Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland!

But if your goods are very urgent and important, having many hands touch your goods due to the nature of the consolidation, can mean an increase in the likelihood that it will be delayed or indeed not arrive at all.

When to Use Next Day Delivery

Now, if you’re despatching a low cost item such as a phone cover or a cheap T shirt then there is no reason why an Overnight delivery or Next Day delivery will be perfectly adequate delivery for your goods.

However, if you’re looking to despatch Granny’s ashes (true story) or send a diamond ring to your beloved (another true story) then may we humbly suggest that Next Day or Overnight delivery may not be the service for you.

Next day delivery is really, really good for items such as print, stationery, food, kitchen stuff or clothes etc.

Basically this type of delivery is perfect for lower value, less important, less time urgent goods.

The reality is that the Next day and Overnight carriers including DPD, TNT, DHL, FedEx, Hermes, Yodel, do a pretty good job for the prices that they charge.

But, ultimately speaking, there is still a small margin for error.

We reiterate; if your goods are very time orientated or very precious then Overnight or Next Day delivery may not be for you.
